Veto Protest is Phony Anti-War Action

Comment by Bob Witanek bwitanek@igc.org

Once again, the anti-war movement is spinning in circles, this time protesting the veto of a pro-war bill that provides $120 billion more for war.

The Democratic Party with its collaborators in the “anti-war” crowd has been able to market this pro-war bill based upon vague, non-binding, conditional, partial and eventual withdrawal of some troops based upon a conditional time line.  The measure that was vetoed is so half baked it can only be called a crock.

Now that Bush has vetoed the bill – a bill that should be defeated – albeit for the wrong reasons, UFPJ, the Peace Action offices, Move On and other groups are mobilizing for small vigils and rallies to protest the veto.

Here is some language of one of the calls:

BUSH VETOED THE CALL TO END THE WAR!

At 6:10 p.m. Eastern Time, Tuesday, May 1st, President Bush announced that he has vetoed Congress' call to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. With this action, Bush indicated that he will not listen to anyone -- not the Iraq Study Commission, not the Congress, and not the American people. His veto indicates his support for endless, not ending the war. We must demonstrate our outrage with his arrogance.”

The bill was anything but a call to end the war.  Why are peace groups engaging in sophistry?  Is it just to allow the Democratic Party to be able to claim anti-war credentials in 2008 when it in fact refuses to take the step of cutting off funding – which is the real way that Congress can “call to end the war?”

Why do we continue to play these games and allow the pro-war Democratic Party to set agenda for anti-war proponents?

As the famous anti-war anthem goes . . . .When Will We Ever Learn?
